The Chief Groomsman

It is a great honour that your dear friend asked you to be his Best man on his wedding day. You are excited, aren’t you? As the Best man, you are the chief, of all the other attendants at the wedding. Don’t get so thrilled yet. You have to understand that this honour extended to you by your groom friend comes with its own bills. When I say bills, I do not only imply financial commitment. Mr Groom doesn’t only expect to see you always behind his back on his big day. I don’t think you get it, dear excited Best man.
There are duties, role or responsibilities your friend expects of you on that day; even before the day! It’s not all about you paying for your tux or getting drunk on the stag night, you have serious work to do. So, let’s get started.
  • Serves as the groom’s personal aide
  • Plans and pays for the bachelor’s eve party
  • Pays for tux, accessories and travel expenses
  • Assists the groom in shopping for his tux and accessories
  • Keeps important contact numbers of vendors
  • Helps the groom dress for the ceremony
  • Assist in shopping for groomsmen tux and accessories
  • Coordinates the groomsmen  and ushers
  • Oversees the ring bearer or keeps the bride’s ring till exchange of rings
  • Witnesses the signing of the marriage register
  • Assists  the groom in packing for honeymoon
  • Gives a speech and/or the first toast (if allowed)
  • Dances with the couple and wedding party at the reception
  • Drives the couple to the wedding night hotel
  • Keeps track of gifts dropped at the reception
  • Helps in transporting gifts from reception
  • Takes care of the groom’s tux after the event
  • Buys the couple a present
Note that this list is not exhaustive. You can add to the list or remove from it. The groom knows what he specifically wants from you. You will do well to ask him. Have a fun filled experience as a best man to Mr Groom.
